From a Masaai Village

to University

Alice Nasiyanga's Journey with Siringit Foundation's Sponsorship Program

How did you hear about the sponsorship program?

I was informed that I would be part of the sponsorship program, which started when I was in primary school in 2009/2010. I received books, a uniform, a hot lunch every day, and sometimes a school trip. After primary school, the sponsorship continued through secondary school. I completed Form 4 at a government school and went on to Form 5 and 6 at a private school, all thanks to the sponsorship. Now, I'm studying for a bachelor's degree at university.

Can you tell us a little about your life and how you grew up?

I was born in 2003 in a small village. My mother had a heart attack shortly after I was born and passed away. My grandmother took care of me and loved me like her own daughter. I lost my father to asthma, so I don't really remember him. I have one brother and two sisters, but they still live in the village. My family is scattered; my brother has his own family, and my sisters are married.

What did you think when you learned you would be part of the sponsorship program?

I felt happy and excited because I was going through a lot as a child. I often wore torn clothes and shoes, and it was painful to feel like I had no one to share that with. Being in the sponsorship program made me feel loved and more equal. It gave me a sense of status in my guardian's family, who previously thought I was abandoned. When they learned I was sponsored, they began to respect me. Siringit Foundation is a place I can call home, and I feel very lucky to be considered one of their own.

Can you share a challenging experience during your sponsorship?

It wasn't always easy. In 2019, during Form 3, I went back to the village and faced hostility from the lady I was living with. She and her daughter sent me back home on the first day of school, which left me frustrated and contemplating dropping out. I felt misunderstood and begged to return to school. One of my teachers reached out to me and contacted my guardian to advocate for my education. Thankfully, I was able to return to school, although staying in that house was still challenging. I worked hard to show my worth, but it affected my school performance initially. Over time, my guardian and their family began to see my efforts, and they now support me.

How has the sponsorship helped you achieve your goals?

The support I've received is invaluable. It has provided me with everything a family would, not just materially, but with love and encouragement. Siringit Foundation has been a major factor in my perseverance, helping me to rise after tough times. I am incredibly grateful for their support and don't know how I could repay them.

Did your studies meet your expectations?

Yes, definitely. The program offers many opportunities for my future, whether with government employment or starting my own venture in farming and livestock. I dream of working abroad in countries that invest in agriculture, like Denmark or Oman.

Can you share a specific moment during your sponsorship that had a big impact on you

The guidance and counseling I've received have been instrumental. My sponsor encourages me to keep going and reminds me to find joy in my journey.

Has your perspective on your future changed?

Absolutely. I can see my dreams coming true. I was born in a village surrounded by cattle and animals, and now I'm on the path to becoming a range manager.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am proud to have reached university; I am the only one in my family and among my peers to achieve this.

What advice would you give to students in similar situations

Keep pushing forward. Life is more than your current struggles; it's filled with love, opportunities, and happiness. Cherish every moment and never give up.

What are your plans after your studies?

I'm considering acquiring land to apply what I've learned or seeking employment opportunities abroad.

How do you plan to give back to your community?

In Arusha, there are many dairy farmers who could benefit from my knowledge of animal care. I aim to help them understand the best nutrition for their livestock. Sponsorship taught me about love. University can be challenging, but I want to support orphanages and others who are struggling, just as I was supported. I believe in the importance of helping others in need.

How has education changed your perspective on life?

Since childhood, I dreamed of going to university, and now I see that dream becoming a reality. Growing up in my situation was difficult, but education has given me the tools to discern right from wrong.

How do you reflect on your journey so far?

The road has never been easy, but I've made it through thanks to the love and support of the foundation. Without Siringit Foundation, I might have ended up in the village, living a very different life.
